Still Lost In The Shadows[C]

Quillsplash didn't know why he agreed to take Wolfpaw out for an evening, but he did, and now he was stuck with the tom. The tortoiseshell led the apprentice into ShadowClan territory, ears pricked for the purpose of their trip: a pesky fox that had been sniffing around camp a little too often. He had wondered why Sablestrike would send only him and an apprentice, when the last time he had sent only two cats, Tawnyshadow had gotten hurt so badly she was now stuck in the medicine cat's den. But a quick glance around camp would reveal the exact reason: ShadowClan just didn't have the cats to spare. He checked that Wolfpaw was still behind him, then plunged into the shadows once more in search of the fox. It didn't take long to find it, and without a word he was off, hurling himself at the beast with flashing claws.

Something about the way Wolfpaw looked at him should have warned him of the dangers of approaching the fox. But he had ignored it, and as he tussled with the fox, he realised with a chill that he was fighting alone. Had the tom been too scared to enter the fight? That was expected, he supposed, but the flat voice that called out to him said otherwise. Of course. This was Sablestrike's plan, wasn't it? He'd sent Crowspirit to kill him first, and when that didn't work he sent him and Tawnyshadow out to hunt down that dog. And everyone knew Sablestrike's disdain for the elder. And now he had sent an apprentice who obviously wouldn't want to help him to accompany him to fight a fox. How had he been so blind? The fox snarled, fangs clamping down on him. Pain jolted through him, tearing a silent scream out of the tortoiseshell as he wrenched his leg out of the beast's mouth. He tumbled away from the snapping jaws and instead slid to the otherside from under it's belly. His fangs snapped at the waving tail, clamping down hard and yanking backwards, sending the fox sprawling with him.

Hedgepaw's brother was insane... or just brainwashed by Sablestrike. Whatever it was, he was now locked in battle with a fox he couldn't hope to defeat and an apprentice not even bothering to hide his glee at watching him fight for his life. Quillsplash wondered what Wolfpaw would tell ShadowClan once he was dead.

...Who said he was going to die? As the fox shifted behind him, preparing for its next attack while still reeling from the last blow, Quillsplash whipped around to face it. Black eyes glittered at him, as if both taken aback and angered. Those eyes wouldn't look so life-like any longer. The warrior surged forward, fangs snapping through bone with a sickening crack, filling the air with squelches and howls of pain through a throat that was broken and cracked. Wet gurgles erupted from the fox's throat, as if its howls had turned to water. The sound made his skin itch and his head light and fuzzy. He had to remind himself to breathe through the thick scent of blood, even when his breaths were the only ones that filled the air.

The body was quickly turning cold, and only once the gush of blood had turned to a small trickle did Quillsplash turned back to face Wolfpaw. Was that disappointment that clouded the tom's eyes, or joy? What was he even supposed to say to this psychopathic apprentice?
