Being an apprentice was great. She got to go out in the territory whenever she wanted, spend more time with Mamma and her brothers--and even Hawkmist! She liked him. Not quite as much as her brothers, but it was close. Apprenticeship was still a trade off, since she didn't get to hang out with them in camp as much, but walking together in the territory was nice too. Hedgepaw especially liked normal border patrols, since they rarely ever saw other cats and they didn't have the pressure of being required to hunt. So on nights like this, right after moonhigh, she and Hawkmist could just walk together in the territory and look at all the pretty trees and step on squishy mud. It was still cold, but no longer so much so that it hurt to breathe in crisp air. Now her breath still puffed out white, and sometimes she liked to imagine that she was making little clouds. Some snowdrifts still remained, and she could step in them to clean her paws of mud before tromping along in the cool earth again. She would be content forever like this.

But, what was the fun in that? She was out here with a friend. She could call him a friend, she was pretty sure, since they used to play when she was a kit. Would he still be interested in playing now? Hedgepaw turned her head, glancing up at the tall and lanky tom who was more than twice her size. The ratio of their sizes had stayed about the same since her kithood. She was unsure if he'd stopped growing yet. His fur, shaggy but soft, almost glowed in the moonlight. "Hey, Hawkmist," she said, breaking the comfortable silence. But she made sure not to talk too loud, and to give him a big smile. "Do you wanna play hide-and-seek again?" Hmm. Maybe he wouldn't like the idea of playing while they were on an official patrol. Hedgepaw tilted her head to the side for a second, blinked hard, and then tried again. "What I mean is--do you want to practice being sneaky together? Like, hiding in the territory. In case an enemy cat shows up or something. Totally not for fun at all. It's a real thing, I promise." Glittering green eyes, reflecting starlight, were fixed completely on him and not the territory around them. Not as obviously pleading as the first time they'd had this interaction--but hopeful.

HawkmistShadowclan Territory

Silvery moonlight cut cleanly through the branches of the pine trees overhead and bathed Hawkmist’s bright white fur as freezing cold mud pressed into Hawkmist’s paws with every step. Hawkmist watched the trees dance with the night time wind, casting shadows in the moonlight, or painting glowing patterns over Hedgepaw’s tabby fur as she slinked through the dark beside him. Most of his focus was on the patrol, ears perked up high on his head and alert for any sign of anything out of the ordinary… but golden eyes kept sliding to watch his companion.

It was strange. Hedgepaw was an apprentice now, and he was a warrior. He’d spent plenty of time with Silverhawk’s family during their awful trek to and from that lake, making himself useful helping to look after the kits so that Pineblossom would allow him to linger near her and Silverhawk as opposed to his father; he knew she had grown. And yet, it seemed as though very little had changed since the first time they spent extended time together. She still had those bright, excited eyes that matched her brother’s despite their lack of blood relation, she still looked at everything as though it was the most wondrous thing in the world, and she still seemed so small.

Once again, despite knowing he’d filled out from the scrawny thing he was upon being named apprentice, Hawkmist thought that there was absolutely no way he was ever this small. Looking at her did something to Hawkmist; it activated an instinct like they were still in dangerous, unknown territory surrounded by enemy clans and she was but a helpless kit that needed looking after. He knew none of that was true, and yet the tight, tense protectiveness did not ease.

His thoughts were drawn back by Hedgepaw addressing him. He turned his head to look at her fully, blinking slowly to indicate that she had his attention and to continue. She smiled, big and bright at him, and perhaps it was the fact that he was still floating in that lingering contentness since his warrior ceremony, but he felt his gaze soften looking at her in reply. She had grown and reached apprentice hood, and yet the plea in her gaze had the same effect on him as it had when she was a kit.

He turned his head forward again silently, staring ahead intensely. They’d nearly completed their circuit, and… She’d been so excited when he agreed last time. His tail flicked as he considered the offer in silence, before he spoke, his own voice as serious and intense as ever, as if they were discussing battle strategies, and not a dressed up game of hide and seek. “I’ll stop and wait until the count of 20, you’ll run ahead and see if you can hide before I start to move again. Then, we’ll switch once I find you.” He turned his head to look at her, and despite his expression remaining flat, there’s the faintest twinkle in his eyes. “I won’t go easy on you. I’m an expert, you know. Had to learn to help hide this fur of mine.” His whiskers twitched as he sat down. “Last time was just a warm up… I hope you’re prepared for a real challenge.”

Against the glow of the moon, Hawkmist looked almost ghostlike, a specter against the dark and muddy territory--and yet, the way he bore himself was regal. Hedgepaw felt her heart nearly stop as she waited, hoping for a response. He was a strong, busy warrior. Maybe he wouldn't have time for her anymore. Hard to read, as always. But when he finally turned his head and met her gaze with a familiarly gentle light in his yellow eyes, her grin widened. I got him! He spoke so seriously, as if this really was a training exercise. Then she'd have to take this seriously, too. It was difficult to stop smiling, but she managed to keep the sparkle in her eyes as she nodded with all the solemnity she could bear. "Right! Uh, then... whenever you're ready!"

The moment she heard the count, she scampered off into the darkness, swallowing down her desire to laugh. Hide, hide, hide--but where? It was far easier to hide in such a big space, at least, with all the grasses and tree trunks compared to just a few sparse dens. Wildly her eyes looked around, searching for the perfect spot as numbers counted down firmly behind her. Where to go? There--a half-melted snowdrift and a dark, muddy pine. Perfect for her coloring. With only a few seconds to spare, Hedgepaw pressed her paws into the snow, where they blended in perfectly, and pressed her brown tabby pelt up against the wrinkled base of the tree. In the darkness, and with the matching shades, she should be nearly invisible without closer scrutiny. Silently she counted along with him. Three... two... one! At the very last moment she remembered to press her lips together and squeeze her eyes shut, so that no hint of grinning white teeth nor shining green eyes would ruin her cover. Then... she just had to wait. But it was so, so hard not to smile when she was playing like this! Hawkmist, you're the best.

HawkmistShadowclan Territory

Cute is not a word Hawkfrost really uses much, if at all, and yet that’s the thought that pops into his head as he watches Hedgepaw fight her smile at his agreement and put on a picture of seriousness. It was almost reassuring to see her so excited. So much had happened in her kithood, and yet… Hawkmist had grown up so quickly. He needed to be strong. Yet, for the first time, Hawkmist found himself almost regretting missed opportunities, and feeling grateful Hedgepaw still had that kittish excitement about her. "Ready,” He said, almost absently as he watched her.

His ear flicked back at such… sappy thoughts, dripping honey and entirely unlike him. (Did his father ever think such things about him? He dismissed the thought out of hand. Definitely not.) They made his skin crawl with discomfort and he shook out his fur, and yet there was a faint smile as he watched Hedgepaw race off, fighting giggles. He huffed out a breath, amused, and shut his eyes as he began to count. “One… two…” He could still hear her scampering for a moment.

It’s strange to do such silly, mindless things. But the night was peaceful, and Hawkmist was content, and it was hard not to indulge. No one else was around to watch him, and any embarrassment over acting kittishly himself is faint and muffled.

Hawkmist’s eyes opened again when he reached twenty. He rose to his feet. Remembering the little phrase Hedgepaw had used originally, he spoke softly into the dark. “Ready or not, here I come.” His paws crunched the pine underfoot as he walked, head swiveling from side to side. Hedgepaw had been here so recently that trying to track her by scent would be difficult, so he focused on sight alone, moving slowly and scanning the underbrush.

To his pride, it took him two circles by the pine tree she had melded into to actually spot her. He kept coming back, silently considering how far she could’ve gotten in the short amount of time on those small legs, and moving up and down the area he’d mapped out. He was just considering expanding it when he spotted her, a gust of wind through the trees ruffling her fur in an entirely un-bark like fashion. Her eyes were clenched shut and she was fighting her smile; and the sight made an involuntary smile briefly curl over Hawkmist’s lips too.

Rather than approach her directly, Hawkmist once again pretended to walk past, only this time he circled back around. Lifting one large paw, he planted it on top of her head, huffing a slight laugh when she jumped. “Got you.” He said. He didn’t smile directly at her, but his eyes still held that twinkle of borderline playfulness. Then, because she deserved to be told as much, he added a gruff, “Well done.”

It was easy, like this, to forget all the scary stories she'd heard. Forget the distant dreams of walking endlessly in snow, of her mother's eyes sticky with sickness, of loud snarling sounds while she held onto her mother's scruff for dear life. It was easy to simply forget about them, as if they'd been nothing but a bad dream. Here in the dark, in the gentle moonlight and brisk air around the pine trees, with her eyes squeezed shut and her teeth locked tightly to keep away the grin that would reveal her hiding place, Hedgepaw was content. She could stay like this forever. Except, she didn't want to. She wanted to be found, and then to be the seeker, and then to go round and round like that forever.

With her eyes closed, it was pitch black dark. A nagging thought at the back of her mind whispered that the sound of Hawkmist's pawsteps might be getting farther away, that he might be abandoning her, that when she finally opened her eyes she might be all alone. But Hedgepaw bit her tongue and wished the thoughts away. They had no reason to be there. When had Hawkmist ever let her down? The sound of his large paws gently pressing pine needles, the distant noise of his breath huffing white into the air... Those kept her reassured despite the chill and the darkness. She'd be fine. He'd find her any minute, despite how good her hiding spot was, because he was Hawkmist and of course he'd find her. And if he gave up he'd tell her, he wouldn't just leave. How many times now had she heard his steps come closer and then retreat? She must've hid good. It was so hard not to giggle--

Thump. A big paw landed--softly--on top of her head. Hedgepaw jumped at least an inch off of the ground in shock, but then laughed immediately. It felt odd to pry her eyes open after nearly a minute or two of squeezing them shut as tightly as she could. For a moment, she saw stars, bright shining spots all popping into her vision with enough brilliance to stun--and then, she saw Hawkmist. Glowing against the light of the moon. His eyes twinkling like Silverpelt.

“Well done.”

Hedgepaw blinked up at him, clearing the blindingly bright after-spots from her eyes. Then, she smiled. A wide grin spread across her face, nearly hurting her cheeks. For a moment or so she just stood there, smiling up at him as if he were the greatest thing in the world, as if his brief praise was the culmination of her entire life up to that point. And maybe, even just in that moment, it was. And maybe, for the next few moments, it still would be.

But then reality encroached, and she remembered what playing hide-and-seek meant. As if to clear the bees out of her brain, Hedgepaw shook her head quickly, soft fur whipping around her face. Forest-green eyes still bright, but slightly less dazzled, she grinned back up at Hawkmist. "Okay! Now it's your turn! Go hide and I'll come find you." Pointedly she closed her eyes again and turned her back, though it was obvious that the smile hadn't gone away by the way it still turned her voice upward. "One..." she began, pointedly and slowly. "Two..."

HawkmistShadowclan Territory

The way Hedgepaw smiled up at him was nothing short of blinding, standing there and looking at him as if he’d single handedly put the stars in the sky. Hawkmist had no idea how to handle such a look; was playing a few games with her and hanging around her family truly enough to earn such admiration? Whatever the cause, the look sent a rush of warmth, a rush of what could only be described as fondness flooding Hawkmist. And, in the same breath, a fresh wave of that protectiveness he felt whenever he looked at Hedgepaw’s small frame. Choosing to look at a cat like Hawkmist like that was proof enough she needed to be protected.

Hedgepaw shook her head quickly, fur fluffing up in the motion, and Hawkmist watched with amusement. She urged him on towards his own hiding spot, and Hawkmist gave a soft hum of acknowledgement and flicked his tail absent-mindedly over her as he turned. "Okay," He said, easy and soft.

Truth be told, though he’d learned to adapt, particularly when hiding from foolish prey, Hawkmist’s stark white pelt stood out in the dark marshes. It was a source of deep frustration during his training. Pigeon~! Silverhawk’s annoying voice sang in the back of his mind, the degrading nickname an ever present reminder of his ill-fitting name and aggravating appearance. But leafbare provided a unique cover in the form of snow. The cold may encroach upon misery and this season in particular may have been harsh, but Hawkmist had one advantage over Silverhawk and the rest of peers in the snow.

Hawkmist listened to Hedgepaw’s counting as he walked along. It didn’t take him long to reach a sizable enough snowdrift to cover his bulk. He settled down beside it, tucking himself into the snow and the dirt. He tucked his paws underneath himself, shut golden eyes and laid his ears back flat to hide even the pink of them. It really would be good practice for Hedgepaw to train keen eyes. The veneer of practice instead of play was a thin one, but Hawkmist told himself he was teaching her valuable skills all the same.

There was something light and bubbly in his chest that he had begun to associate with his time with Hedgepaw, a kittish sort of enjoyment. He didn't quite feel like smiling, but truthfully it was a close thing. It was peaceful, sitting still and quiet like this as he heard Hedgepaw move around. He didn’t take the time to pay much mind to his surroundings very often, but now he paid attention to the song of the cicadas and nighttime critters, to the wind rattling the pines and ruffling his fur. It was cold, but a refreshing sort of cold, like a drink of water after a long spar.

It ought to have been scary, with her eyes closed. But Hedgepaw wasn't scared of the dark. She was used to it--the night was what she'd grown up in, and besides, what was there to be afraid of when she was with someone else? Especially Hawkmist, or Silverhawk, or strong warriors like them. She had nothing to be afraid of, even with her eyes closed. So she kept them firmly shut and did not peek, even when she heard faint rustling sounds behind her. "Sixteen, seventeen..." Wait. What came after seventeen? Whoops. Hopefully Hawkmist wouldn't notice. She shook her head and skipped it. "Seventeen... Nineteen, twenty!" With an enthusiastic grin, she spun around, eyes eagerly searching the surrounding area. She hadn't heard his pawsteps go too far; obviously he hadn't left, and of course he wouldn't abandon her. He would never do that. So she just had to look around this little area thoroughly, and she'd find him.

It shouldn't have been as hard to find him as it was. He was more than twice her size, after all, and he was bright white! He couldn't curl up real small like she could, and in the darkness it was usually pretty easy to see him. But it took Hedgepaw several minutes of careful scrutiny to find him. Because there was a lot of snow. Her ears were half-pinned back in concentration as she walked around in a circle, staring at each inch of moonlit snow as if it would suddenly look back at her with a yellow glimmer. With the dim lighting, though, it was very hard to distinguish the texture of melting, porous flakes with the soft fur she knew she was looking for. Eventually though, she saw a distinctly triangular patch that could only have been an ear. A closer look revealed Hawkmist using the same strategy she had, folding every part of himself in as close as possible and closing his eyes to remain unseen. He was so good at it! Despite the brightness of his pelt, it had taken her a long time to find him. She stopped for a moment, considering what she should do. He'd dropped his paw on her head, but her paws were so little they'd barely make a difference. She could just speak out and spoil the fun, but she'd rather do something cool like he did. As she thought, though, their first meeting came to mind.

Slowly, trying to act casual--if not for the smile on her face giving her away, though he couldn't see it--Hedgepaw walked around to the other side of Hawkmist. Then she dropped into a hunting crouch, waggled her haunches, and pounced on the tip of his tail. Just like right before the first time they'd played hide and seek. Only this time, since she was a bit bigger, she made sure that she wouldn't hurt him by using claws. "Gotcha!" she exclaimed, voice bright with laughter. He probably didn't like her getting too close to him, if she recalled correctly the way his pelt fluffed up when most cats were in what Mamma called his "personal space," so she got off the tail quickly once he'd been alerted. Green eyes sparkled in the darkness, seeking his gaze. "That was really good! I almost didn't see you, even though you're bigger'n me so you had to work lots harder." Hmm. It was hard to remember that he might not want her to get too close, 'cause she was so used to pressing up close to her brothers all the time. So before she could do anything crazy, she leaned in--booped his cheek with her nose--and then backed away, still grinning. "Thanks for playing with me. I have a good time whenever I'm with you! You're so nice and so brave."

HawkmistShadowclan Territory

Hawkmist’s lips twitched in amusement as he heard Hedgepaw stutter over her counting, careful not to let his expression break further lest it give away his position too fast. That light and bubbly feeling grew as he listened to Hedgepaw search around, listening to her little pawsteps on the pine and snow covered floor of the marsh. As he sat there in the quiet in his own thoughts, a term came to him. Sister. She was Silverhawk’s sister, but if Hawkmist was willing to admit it to himself, he saw her in the same light. He wondered if he would’ve made a good brother, had he had the chance to have siblings of his own. He doubted it. Hedgepaw already had plenty of brothers of her own and no real need for him, but with few cats of his own to look out for the way he wants to do for her, he thought he’d do his best anyway.

His distracted thoughts and Hedgepaw’s successful sneaking meant he was caught completely off guard when small paws latched onto the end of his tail, eyes flying open, fur straightening in surprise and body jumping to attention quickly. By the time he turned around, Hedgepaw was already stepping off of him, smile bright and eyes sparkling. His eyes softened once more and squinted a little in the corners at her enthusiastic praise, and then she did something surprising.

The quick show of affection, her cold nose pressing against his cheek, left him blinking rapidly. He was certainly not nice nor particularly brave, but he could not bring himself to correct her. Hedgepaw was happy. Hawkmist felt that was all that mattered right then. He was always awkward in matters of affection, so unused to it, but he made his best attempt anyway. He reached over and placed his paw on top of her head again, this time moving it to ruffle up the fur on top of her head to get it to stick up every which way. Then, he gave a slight, but warm smile.

“You did well too.” He said softly. “You have keen eyes. You will be a powerful warrior like your brother in no time.” He dropped his paw again. He looked at her for a moment longer, then added, “You’re sweet, squirt." He looked forward, tilting his head a little. “Come on, we should probably keep moving,” He said, flicking his tail over her shoulder as he began to walk. “We can practice stealth some more whenever you’d like though. It’s a good skill to work on.” And Hawkmist enjoyed Hedgepaw’s company.
